Die 9. Woche

The 9th Week

On Monday of this week I took the 8th grade test at school. This only contained the vocabulary and grammar from last Saturday.

We then emptied the walls of the office. We placed the furniture in the middle of the rooms for the first time, so that the painters could paint the walls in peace. We found millions of ants and millions of ant eggs behind a pin board that was taped with photos. We left it there for the first time because we thought the painter could remove it.

After work I went back to the dialogue shop because I had problems with the provider again. This time the employee explained all the details to me so that I can understand how it all works. Everything is all right again.

The next day we expected the painter at school, but he never came and came. We waited all day without any feedback. I even waited for him until 6 p.m., but still didn’t get there (my presence lasts until 4 p.m.).

In the evening I cooked a Turkish dish for the Rathna family. It’s called „Türlü“, a kind of stew consisting of eggplants, potatoes, runner beans, tomatoes and spices. This is served with rice. They really enjoyed it, which made me very happy.

I came into the office on Wednesday morning and the ants were gone. Then you probably looked for a new hiding place.

Fortunately, the painters came at 8 a.m. It turned out that the painter was at a funeral on Tuesday. I didn’t blame him, but I would have expected a decision as I had actually waited a whole day and would have died of boredom …

There were three of them and got to work: they cleaned the whole office, cleaned the fans, sanded and painted the windows, doors and frames. The painter also started painting the ceiling and walls with a white base. When it was dry, it already started with the actual color: „apple white“. He even painted the outer walls of the office … In the door frame we found termites that have eaten through the wood, the painter treated this and also plugged the holes. As I noticed, the wood is not so good quality …

In between, Samuel and Helena came to visit. They wanted to give their godchildren cell phones and Samuel also filmed the lessons of the teachers (including mine). Towards the end of the day, he also filmed how I explained the renovation process and the new, not entirely complete, office.

The painters left at 5:30 p.m., which means they worked 9.5 hours that day. Great praise!

The next day the painter came alone at 7:30 a.m. He finished painting the walls. Workers from the temple helped him get the furniture out of the rooms, we also helped with little things. 6 men were at work and brought the furniture to the preschool room, which was next door.

The painter washed and sanded the floor of the office to prepare it for the vinyl floor.

I cooked again that evening. This time there were zucchini pancakes with different curries. It tasted great.

On Friday everything was ready: the floor was clean, the walls, fans and ceilings were painted and the windows and doors were painted. In the evening the painter glued the vinyl floor.

Since we still had a large zucchini at home, I simply breaded and fried it.

On Saturday I was really excited to see the new floor. And to my delight, he looked great! There was only a small piece missing, which is why we had to replace it and Nayana went shopping. We glued it later and everything was ready. The furniture also came on that day. That made me very happy. They were brought to the office and set up straight away. We had a mother sew the new tablecloths right away and set them on the tables. A new chair was already coming. What was missing was the second chair and the computer desk. These should come on Wednesday.

In addition, two visitors came to Ingrid and Hans who wanted to meet their godchildren. We had a good time and they kindly invited me to the hotel for a day.

My lessons took place during all of this. That day was practically „game day“. With the 6th, 7th and 9th grade I played a game of colors with balloons. They had a lot of fun, which made me very happy. In the 8th grade we wrote the announced test. I placed the children far apart and gave them half an hour to answer / edit the worksheet. Most of the students didn’t know what to do. I explained to them that I had already announced that and they had agreed. I also explained that it was just last week’s worksheet. Then they were partially relieved. The tests would also be graded by me. After the test, we played the same game that I played with the others.

The children wondered if it was my last day because they gave me small toffees as a reward. I said no; Then they informed me that on February 8th, 2020 is a Buddhist holiday and that there will be no classes. I then told them that the next time (02/15/20) would be the last time. Suddenly they became very sad and didn’t want me to go. I also became very sad because only then did I really realize that my stay here will soon be over. A few girls spontaneously gave me flowers that they had made of paper. Beautiful. I had to pull myself together because my eyes were almost filled with tears. Luckily nobody had noticed …

In between, Samuel and Helena came to visit. They wanted to give their godchildren cell phones and Samuel also filmed the lessons of the teachers (including mine). Towards the end of the day, he also filmed how I explained the renovation process and the new, not entirely complete, office.

In the evening I graded the tests with a little help from Rathna. 1 is the worst grade and 6 the best. The class had an average of 3.3. Most of the children collected points in the grammar section. They jumbled the vocabulary wildly. And I could also see who had spiked each other…

On Sunday the family from Rathna and I went on a short trip to the lighthouse in Dondra. This lighthouse is the highest in Sri Lanka and marks the southernmost point of Sri Lanka.

The lighthouse was very impressive and looked very high when you were right in front of it. Unfortunately, you couldn’t go into the tower because you would have to register beforehand. No problem. We went into the water next door and cooled our feet. The water was as beautiful and clear as in Mirissa.

This week flew by. Like all the time here … unfortunately.
